The Thermal Energy Storage Module captures and stores heat within preheated regolith, ensuring a dependable energy reserve for use during the harsh lunar nights when solar power is unavailable. During the lunar day, regolith is heated and deposited into insulated piles using the MDC and Preheating Modules. Thanks to the natural insulation properties of regolith, the heat is retained within the pile’s core. When needed, regolith is retrieved and its stored thermal energy can be converted into power or used directly for heating ISRU units, habitats, or equipment, providing a lightweight, passive alternative to batteries or nuclear power sources.

Surviving the lunar night using stored thermal energy.

  • Heats regolith during lunar daytime.

  • Retains heat through thermal mass properties.

  • Supplies stored energy for power and thermal management at night.
