Excavation Module

The Excavation Module is designed to efficiently collect loose lunar regolith directly from the surface, forming the first step of the Regolith Pipeline. Mounted on robotic rovers or mobile platforms, it uses the same core Modular Drum Conveyor (MDC) technology to gather and store regolith internally as it excavates. Thanks to its simple, robust design, the module continues operating even as its excavation tip gradually wears down from the abrasive lunar soil. The uniform geometry along its axis ensures that functionality remains unaffected by surface abrasion, providing exceptional reliability in harsh conditions. Once filled, the Excavation Module securely holds the collected regolith and can discharge it precisely when needed, feeding the next stage of the regolith handling system. Its compact, modular structure minimizes dust emissions during collection and transfer, making it ideal for integration into ISRU workflows where material quality, containment, and system durability are critical.

  • Mounted on rovers or small robotic excavators.

  • Uniform shape along the axis ensures continued operation despite abrasion.

  • Collects and stores loose regolith, ready for transfer into MDC pipelines.
